HKSTP Organises Advanced Manufacturing Strategic Partnership Signing Ceremony with 11 Advanced Manufacturing Enterprises to Establish R&D Centres and Production Bases
(Hong Kong, 28 June 2024) – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) organised Advanced Manufacturing Strategic Partnership Signing Ceremony with 11 advanced manufacturing enterprises today, collaboratively driving the development of new industrialisation in Hong Kong. These enterprises are set to set up research and development (R&D) centres, operational bases, and production facilities within the Hong Kong Science Park and InnoParks, focusing in the three strategic industries of new industrialisation as set in the Blueprint to bring in new elements to Hong Kong’s manufacturing sector. It is also expected to bring in new investment and create new job opportunities, contributing to further improve the development of Hong Kong’s innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem and to promote Hong Kong’s diversified economy.
The collaboration was jointly orchestrated and promoted by the New Industrialisation Development Office under the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau and HKSTP. The ceremony was witnessed by Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry; Dr Ge Ming, Commissioner for Industry (Innovation and Technology); and Mr Albert Wong, CEO of HKSTP. Mr Oscar Wong, Head of Innofacturing of HKSTP, signed with representatives from the advanced manufacturing strategic partner enterprises.
Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, said: “The decision by these distinguished enterprises to establish or expand their advanced manufacturing operations in Hong Kong signifies a strong vote of confidence in the city's development as an international centre for innovation and technology. Today’s function, with the theme on advanced manufacturing, is the first of its kind. The 11 enterprises signing partnership operate across sectors such as biopharmaceuticals and equipment, artificial intelligence, robotics and automation, semiconductor equipment, new energy vehicles, and green energy, with many of these are advanced manufacturing sectors initiating operations in Hong Kong for the first time. The proposed total investment is estimated to reach HK$14 billion, aiming to create over 2,200 job positions.
Over the past two years, we have liaised with over 100 innovation and technology enterprises with high potential and representativeness to establish or expand their businesses in the city, including at least 20 leading enterprises. The task to attract enterprises and investments set out in the first Policy Address of the Chief Executive in 2022 has been completed three years ahead of the target. The HKSAR Government will continue to adopt a multi-pronged approach to promote new industrialisation, foster effective collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research and investment sectors, attract more enterprises to Hong Kong, and accelerate the establishment of Hong Kong as an international hub for innovation and technology.”
In the “Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint” announced by the HKSAR Government at the end of 2022, one of the strategic directions it outlines is to enhance the innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem and promote new industrialisation in Hong Kong. The Blueprint proposed the comprehensive approach to promote upstream basic research, accelerate the transformation and commercialisation of midstream R&D outcomes and support the development of downstream industries, thereby establishing a robust I&T ecosystem. The government established the New Industrialisation Development Office earlier this year, focusing on an industry-oriented approach. This Office supports strategic enterprises to develop their businesses in Hong Kong, assists the manufacturing sector in upgrading and transformation by making use of I&T, and provides support for start-ups.
HKSTP has created a thriving I&T ecosystem, offering comprehensive support through state-of-the-art infrastructure such as laboratories, a vast network of investors, industry experts, and corporate partners, and housing world-class researchers. Currently, HKSTP supports 12 unicorns and with more than 14,000 research talents. It also hosts more than 1,800 tech ventures from 28 countries and regions focused on developing health tech, AI and robotics, fintech and smart city technologies. HKSTP’s efforts are central to transforming Hong Kong into an international hub for I&T.
Furthermore, HKSTP has consistently supported the development of the manufacturing sector in Hong Kong through its three InnoParks, aligning with the government's direction towards new industrialisation. The InnoParks provide a range of world-class facilities. The Tseung Kwan O InnoPark, for instance, houses the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) and the Data Technology Hub (DT Hub while the Microelectronics Centre (MEC) at the Yuen Long InnoPark is set to be in operation in the second half of the year.
