(Hong Kong, 25 June 2023) – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) proudly concluded the 20th annual Robocon Hong Kong Contest, which aims to foster a new generation of innovation and technology (I&T) talent with cross-disciplinary expertise, from engineering to AI and robotics. This competition has become a prestigious platform for driving wider interest in I&T and the city’s fast-growing innovation ecosystem.
The winning team, “The Lord of the Rings” team from the Chinese University of Hong Kong emerged as the Robocon 2023 victors after several thrilling head-to-head contests. “The Lord of the Rings” team will represent Hong Kong at the Asia-Pacific Robot Contest 2023 (ABU Robocon) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where they will compete against international counterparts this August. Hong Kong’s winning Robocon teams have historically excelled on this global stage, with Team Hong Kong being crowned international ABU Robocon Grand Prix Champion in 2019 and 2022. This year’s Robocon 2023 champion will continue this far-reaching legacy of past generations of contestants, to pass on the Robocon spirit to future generations of game-changing talent.
Robocon 2023 Hong Kong, with the theme “Casting Flowers Over Angkor Wat”, brought together over 200 students from eight local institutions, forming a total of 14 teams, each competing with high tech deployed rabbit and elephant robot combination to complete tasks within the arena.
Inspired by and modeled after the Robocon Hong Kong Contest, the 4th Mini Robocon targeting junior secondary school students was also successfully held on 26 March 2023. The event aims to develop all rounded soft and hard skillsets together with knowledge in AI and robotics among younger students. The “Please queue up” team from Chiu Chow Association Secondary School was crowned this year’s champion.
Albert Wong, CEO of HKSTP, said: "We congratulate the winners and all participants of Robocon 2023. These young innovators are a great showcase of the growth and dynamism of Hong Kong’s AI and robotics sector today which will meet the surging global demand for AI and engineering talent. HKSTP and Robocon 2023 builds on a 20-year legacy of inspiring Hong Kong’s current generation and future generations of world class I&T talent. We are committed to continuing this legacy by working with local education institutions to develop local and global talent to grow and enrich the city’s world-class I&T ecosystem.”
