Hong Kong Science Park company Master Dynamic pioneers cutting-edge diamond-marking technology and applications
(Hong Kong, 13 March 2017) - Master Dynamic Limited (“Master Dynamic”), based in Hong Kong Science Park, today announced its R&D and application success. Utilising its expertise in material analysis, nanofabrication and precision engineering, Master Dynamic collaborated with renowned jeweller Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited (“Chow Tai Fook”) to develop a revolutionary nano-marking technology for diamonds and create a new end-to-end commercialisation strategy. The application not only helps boost customers’ confidence in natural diamonds but also sets new standards in the global diamond industry. In the process of developing the technology, Master Dynamic also leveraged the properties of natural diamond to develop quantum technology materials as well as collaborated with the medical school of a local university to use fine diamond powder generated from polishing for endoscopic removal of tumours, contributing to the accuracy of early-stage cancer detection and treatment.
Revolutionary patented technology makes Chow Tai Fook T MARK a trusted guarantee for natural diamonds
Utilising its expertise on material analytics and nanofabrication, Master Dynamic applied its focused ion beam patented technology to successfully develop the world’s tiniest nano diamond mark without damaging or leaving residual chemical in a diamond. Master Dynamic also deployed advanced precision engineering and image recognition technology to develop a high-resolution computerised optical microscope (Red Dot Design Award in 2015) for examining T MARK diamonds, leveraging advanced technology to authenticate natural diamonds. Chow Tai Fook, which co-developed the technology with Master Dynamic, launched the T MARK diamond project to create a complete end-to-end customer value chain in its vertically integrated business model. The project offers guarantees for natural diamonds and enables customers to easily track, manage and record a diamond’s history, from raw material procurement to cutting, polishing, designing and setting, through to being purchased from store and given as a present. The T MARK project shows how technology breakthrough can bring innovative personalised customer experience and elevate the quality of the digital lifestyle.
Master Dynamic CEO Dr. Tom Kong said: “We are proud to work with industry leader Chow Tai Fook in developing a cutting-edge technology that leads international jewellery industry development. The technology helps boost customers’ confidence in diamond authenticity by preventing swapping and counterfeiting. The state-of-the-art facilities in Hong Kong Science Park facilitated our R&D. Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation connects us with various business partners on an ongoing basis, and provides value-added support services that are crucial to our development. We hope that this collaboration will take Master Dynamic’s technologies out of Hong Kong and be recognised and applied across the world.”
Chow Tai Fook managing director Kent Wong said: “Over the years, Chow Tai Fook has been supporting innovation and technology as well as research and development. The collaboration with Master Dynamic to develop the patented marking technology not only gives us a unique competitive edge but also helps enhance customers’ confidence in purchasing natural diamonds. Through this collaboration, we witnessed the solid innovative power of Hong Kong’s technology firms to break through conventional limitations. I believe by applying Master Dynamic’s technology, T MARK can change diamond industry practices and take the entire industry forward.”
Using diamond for cancer treatments in collaboration with the medical school of The Chinese University of Hong Kong
While developing the T MARK project, Master Dynamic has also turned natural diamond into an ideal material for nanotechnology development and medical applications, leveraging natural diamond’s unique attributes of being harmless to human bodies and the intrinsic florescence from the natural diamond’s Nitrogen Vacancy centre. Master Dynamic collaborated with the medical school of The Chinese University of Hong Kong to develop nano-diamond bio-labelling technology for gastrointestinal cancer detection and surgery. Through Master Dynamic’s nanofabrication technology, the fine diamond powder produced in the cutting and polishing process will bond with specific antibodies that in turn bond with cancer cells when introduced into the human body. This will help doctors differentiate early-stage cancer tissues and normal ones, improve on tumour removal surgery and increase the accuracy of early-stage cancer detection and treatment.
Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation CEO Mr Albert Wong said: “I am pleased to see a Hong Kong Science Park company mastering such a sophisticated advanced technology. This does not only bring fresh opportunities to the consumer market but also proves that the fruits of Hong Kong’s R&D can produce unlimited possibilities for the society. Material science and precision engineering are the pillars for advanced manufacturing. Many Hong Kong Science Park companies are developing related technologies. With the global trend of Industry 4.0 and Hong Kong’s reindustrialisation development, material science and precision engineering lay the foundation for new products and new industries to thrive, as well as diversify applications. Master Dynamic’s R&D has been adopted by Chow Tai Fook. The two parties discovered further possibilities of natural diamond for medicine and data transmission in the process. The development potential of material science and precision engineering is clear. I hope that more talent will join the fields and more companies will adopt local R&D results. Together we will drive the development of Hong Kong’s knowledge economy.”
