Record Number of Jobs Offered at Hong Kong Science Park Career Expo 2019 is a Reflection of Exciting New Opportunities in Hong Kong’s I&T Sector
Hong Kong, 9 March 2019 – Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) hosted the annual Hong Kong Science Park Career Expo 2019 at Hong Kong Science Park today. This year's event was bigger than ever before, with around 13,000 visitors seeking new careers for themselves and experiencing the excitement and energy of Hong Kong's growing Innovation and Technology (I&T) sector.
More than 1,600 positions were offered at the Expo by about 150 local, regional and international companies representing four major technology fields – Biomedical Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Smart City and Fintech. This number was a 60 percent increase compared to last year, setting a record for number of jobs offered at the event.
Of these positions, 80 percent were technology and R&D-related, such as data scientists, lab technicians, AI engineers, biomedical engineers, software analysts and developers, and cloud computing programmers. They include entry, mid and senior-level roles, with more than 100 positions available for doctoral degree holders. Other positions on offer were those in supporting roles such as finance, accounting and marketing.
Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, said “New and evolving technologies such as AI, machine learning, Big Data and blockchain are disrupting and transforming many industries and the way we work. This development creates demand for new skills and jobs, and it is noteworthy to see many of these roles being offered at the Career Expo.
It is time we ramp up our digital skills even more and seize the opportunities available to us all. Hong Kong has a unique position to turn into an international I&T talent hub as the Greater Bay Area develops into a world-class innovation centre. May we continue to bring the best talent that Hong Kong and the world can offer to the I&T sector, and secure an even better future for Hong Kong.”
For this year, a fun yet intense activity to inspire job seekers was held at the Expo. The "60-second Talent Pitch" gave 10 participating job seekers from around the world with an opportunity to impress 27 would-be-employers-cum-judges with a 60-second personal pitch on stage to secure interview opportunities. It was a huge success with a total of 62 job interview sessions happening on-the-spot and one of the participants received the employment offer.
Other highlights at this year’s Expo were the Shape Up and Career Clinic Spaces. The Shape Up Space showcased an AI-driven job interview app developed by a Park incubatee. The app assesses a participant’s personality traits through analysing facial expressions in a one-minute conversation, and the results shared through email. At the Career Clinic Space, five leading HR and headhunting consultancies provided career planning and advice to participants throughout the day.
HKSTP has been committed to growing the city’s I&T ecosystem and through organising the Career Expo. HKSTP strives to connect the I&T companies with talent and build a sustained pipeline of talent to support the development.
