Watts Optical Instruments Ltd. is a start-up formed from the PolyU Light Field (LF) research projects on the applications of light field technology. Our core competence lies in the design and precision fabrication of microlens array (MLA) used for light field camera systems, and the development of light field image processing and displaying. We have a team with expertise in optics design, light field technology, control, and advanced manufacturing technique of tailor-made MLA. We are happy to work with various manufacturers or direct end users to apply the light field technology to various novel applications.

Technology
Light field technology is an emerging technology in the optics industry for capturing and displaying multi-view 3D images. Due to its newness and the barrier to the acquisition of critical components (i.e. the microlens array MLA for the camera), there are few companies worldwide engaged in the industrial applications of this optical technology. Our designed plenoptic camera is based on standard commercial camera sensors, which have the advantage of fitting into existing optical systems. Compared to existing 3D acquisition systems and metrology instruments, the plenoptic camera is a non-contact, cheap, compact and single-shoot camera, that can capture LF images in millisecond or high frame rate videos. It has most of the features that a traditional optical system can provide, but at the same time has lots of unique features and potential new applications. We are developing two different Light Field markets, which are a plenoptic 3D measurement system for the 3DAOI market and a multi-view 3D imaging system for glasses-less 3D display. Our products include light field cameras, online automatic inspection of semiconductor packages, bio-medical microscopes, and various precision optical glass components.
