(Hong Kong, 23 June 2024) — Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) successfully hosted Robocon 2024, drawing over 200 students from eight local tertiary institutions. As AI becomes a key driver of diversified economy, this year's competition emphasised enhancing AI elements, making it the most difficult one in history by challenging the coordination and strategy capabilities between the robots.
The competition, themed "Harvest Day," draws inspiration from the cultivation of terraced fields in Vietnam. Participating teams must design and manufacture both manually operated and fully automated robots, and, according to the rules, integrate machine learning models and computer vision technology to equip the automatic robot with 'smart recognition' capabilities that can automatically detect 'rice' within the competition area and harvest it to earn higher scores.
Mr Albert Wong, CEO of HKSTP, said, “Each year, the Robocon competition gathers passionate and skilled interdisciplinary talents. It serves not only as a platform to showcase their abilities but also as a nursery for cultivating and discovering exceptional talent for the I&T industry. This year, in line with AI trends, we are creating a more challenging competition environment for the students. We hope this will enable them to experience the powerful application of technology in real-world scenarios through both learning and practice. HKSTP will continue to work closely with local educational institutions and the industry to nurture outstanding talents and enhance the development of innovative technologies, injecting new energy into the I&T sector."
After several intense rounds of competition, the team ‘Wonder Seed' from The Chinese University of Hong Kong emerged victorious and will represent Hong Kong at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Robocon 2024 in Quang Ninh, Vietnam this August, aiming for further success on the international stage. Hong Kong teams have historically performed exceptionally well at this event, having won the championship in both 2019 and 2022. These successes have brought honour and bolstered the city’s prominence in the field.
