Re-industrialisation Conference reveals profound economic impacts on relevant development of Hong Kong

(Hong Kong, 15 February 2016) - TecONE, a one-stop resources centre under the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation ("HKSTP") and Hong Kong Productivity Council(“HKPC”), will hold an annual event Re-industrialisation Conference at Charles K. Kao Auditorium, Hong Kong Science Park on 22 February, revealing how re-industrialisation brings about profound impacts and enormous business opportunities to the future development of society and economy in Hong Kong. Re-industrialisation, being one of the measures vigorously upheld by the government in the policy address of this year, is a directive strategy for promoting the development of intelligent and high value-added manufacturing industries in Hong Kong.   

The Conference is composed of various programmes, which cover insights from government officers, industrial professionals and international experts in various aspects of re-industralisation. They will guide a number of participants to carry out insightful discussion and in-depth analysis on the impacts and advantages of re-industrialisation from different perspectives, among which, increase in employment opportunities, diversified economic development, commercialisation of innovation and technology, broadening business opportunities, shortening in production cycles, prompt reaction to market demand and achieving small-scale customisation and production, etc.  

In the Conference, Nicholas Yang, JP, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, will deliver a keynote speech on the theme of re-industrialisation; Kay Matzner, International Project Manager of Fraunhofer Society from Germany, will take Germany as an example in his speech on the development and results of Industry 4.0 in simple language; whilst Professor Daniel Cheng, Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries, will conduct a tailored analysis of the current situation in Hong Kong and how Hong Kong industry can benefit from re-industrialisation.  

Allen Ma, CEO of HKSTP, said, "Re-industrialisation is a key factor to promote competitiveness for Hong Kong’s innovation development and economic growth. The development plan of HKSTP consists of various strategies which encourage Hong Kong to stride forward towards re-industrialisation, including re-developing our three industrial estates into new and  high-end industrial buildings and expanding Hong Kong Science Park to increase the capacity of Hong Kong to incubate and commercialise technology-based innovations. Our ultimate goal is to develop a unique value  chain in which ‘Innovate in Hong Kong, ‘Design in Hong Kong’ and ‘Made in Hong Kong’ all can be realised in this compact city."  

Agnes Mak, Executive Director of HKPC, said, "HKPC has been supporting local enterprises in industrial upgrading and transformation in order to develop high value-added businesses. With the strong foundation and experience of the local industry, re-reindustrialisation will ensure the growth in economic diversity of Hong Kong. In line with the Industry 4.0 concept and the national strategy of ‘Made in China 2025’, HKPC has stepped up its industry support and introduced various new initiatives recently to promote smart production technologies. These include promoting the application of 3D printing, robotics and conformal cooling technologies; as well as the introduction of software and mobile applications' reliability and system security testing to prepare enterprises to embark on re-industrialisation."  

Other key topics that will be brought up for discussion at the Conference include the important functions developed through the progress of re-industrialisation by software, brand-new industrial production mode from the angles of creative industry, new definitions for production flow from business perspective, how re-industrialisation is achieved from the view of talent development, as well as different local sectors’ views on re-industrialisation.
